It’s that time of year again and Mexico is gearing up for its annual Independence Day celebration, also known as “El Grito de Dolores” and we’re getting ready to commemorate it in grand style with a typical Mexican fiesta on our Sunset Terrace.

On Sept. 16, 1810 Mexican citizens rose against their Spanish conquerors, kicking off the Mexican War of Independence. Roman Catholic priest Father Miguel Hidalgo led the charge when he rang the church bell in the town of Dolores Hidalgo and cried out his impassioned, history-making “Grito” (shout) advocating freedom from Spain.

Since 1825, the anniversary of that historic event has been celebrated as Mexican Independence Day.

That “liberty bell,” which now hangs above the main entrance of the National Palace in the Zocalo in Mexico City, is rung at 11 p.m. on the eve of September 16 each year by the president of the Republic, who shouts a revised rendition of the patriot’s cry: “Que Viva Mexico!”

In honor of the historic event, we are hosting a Gran Fiesta on September 16, from 7 – 10 p.m. highlighting a bountiful buffet of Mexican delicacies, open international bar and a host of festivities.

Food stations will offer a wide selection of traditional recipes. Special entertainment will feature a Mexican folkloric ballet show, Mariachi band, musical trios and a colorful parade. Piñatas for both children and adults .

To truly get into the spirit of this celebration, face-painting will be available so that our guests can get the true “feel” for this special Mexican event.

In addition, local artisans and flea market vendors will be on hand to sell their colorful Mexican wares so that you can take home a special souvenir from your visit. Purchases must be paid with cash or credit card and cannot be charged to your room.

The finale of this special evening will be a stellar fireworks display at 9.45 p.m., which guests will be able to view from the Sunset Terrace or from your suite.

There is no special surcharge for this event and reservations are recommended

It’s definitely fiesta time so be sure to join in the festivities.

Viva Mexico!
